The Attorney General for India is the Indian government’s chief legal advisor and is its chief advocate in the courts. They are appointed by the President of India at the instance of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution.
A person who is qualified to be the Judge of the Supreme Court of India is eligible to become the attorney general of India. The President makes the appointment in consultation with the cabinet ministry.
